GWC attorneys Louis Anthony Cairo and Bennett J. Baker recently obtained a $1.9 million wrongful death settlement for the family of a young woman who was tragically killed in an Illinois semi truck accident.
Semi Truck Accident Claims Two Lives
In August 2016, a 25-year-old woman was a passenger in a small sedan that was heading westbound on I-80 in Rutland Township, Illinois. At that time, a large semi truck was also heading westbound on I-80, directly behind the sedan.
When the young woman’s sedan stopped along with the rest of westbound traffic because of road construction, the semi truck driver negligently failed to reduce his speed, and he collided with the sedan so violently that it was forced under the trailer of a semi truck directly ahead of it, causing the other semi truck to strike the pickup truck in front of it. All four vehicles then caught fire, and the young woman, the sedan’s driver, and the pickup truck’s driver were killed on the scene.
GWC Obtains Wrongful Death Settlement for Grateful Family
The woman was survived by her parents and two brothers. The family hired GWC to help them get justice for the senseless, agonizing death of their beloved daughter and sister. The other two deceased individuals were represented by other law firms.
GWC filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the truck’s driver/owner and the company that owned the trailer. After conducting strong depositions with Defense witnesses, including the driver, Mr. Cairo and Mr. Baker were able to convince the Defendants’ insurance company to tender its full policy limits in this matter without a trial date being set. Out of these policy limits, GWC obtained a $1.9 million dollar settlement for the young woman’s surviving family.
