When employees are injured while working for Chicago Public Schools (CPS), they are entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits are paid by CPS, an insurer, or an affiliated contracting company, and they typically cover reasonable expenses related to a workplace injury or illness.
The Chicago workers’ compensation attorneys at GWC Injury Lawyers have represented injured Chicago union workers since 1977. As one of the largest and most successful workers’ compensation firms in the state, we have represented hundreds of CPS employees and contractors. Our clients have received workers’ compensation for all types of workplace injuries and illnesses, including:
- Brain injuries and concussions
- Broken bones
- Burns
- Electrical accident injuries
- Ladder falls
- Neck sprains
- On-the-job car accident injuries
- Slip-and-falls
- Tissue damage
- Toxic substance exposure
Our legal team has also represented more union workers than any other Illinois law firm. We routinely speak at union events to educate Chicago union members regarding their rights in the workers’ compensation process, including the importance of promptly informing an employer about a workplace injury.

IUOE: Keeping Chicago Schools Safe And Running
The International Union of Operating Engineers is a large trade union that was founded in 1896 and has about 400,000 members. The IUOE primarily represents operating engineers who work in the construction industry, industrial complexes, and the service industry. The IUOE also represents a significant number of public workers and healthcare workers such as nurses.
The IUOEs 123 local unions are dedicated to promoting the common interests of their members in the United States and Canada. The union focuses on protecting member wages, promoting member competitiveness through training, and alleviating healthcare costs through extensive coalition-building.
Chicago members of the IUOE are served through Local 143 and Local 143B. Local 143 members primarily operate and maintain the buildings of Chicago Public Schools. Local 143B represents Chicago Public School Financial and Payroll Service employees.
