Police have made an arrest in connection with a fatal hit-and-run motorcycle accident in Crystal Lake, IL.
One Dead, One Hospitalized
On September 10, 2019, a 53-year-old Crystal Lake woman was driving at the intersection of Virginia Road and Berkshire Drive just after 7:30 p.m. when her vehicle struck a motorcycle carrying two people. The force of the collision threw the two riders into the roadway. The male motorcyclist died shortly after the crash, while his female passenger has been hospitalized at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries.
The driver who struck them fled the scene in her vehicle, but Crystal Lake Police located her on the 900 block of Wesley Drive about twenty minutes after the motorcycle accident. She was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash, though other charges are reportedly expected. The driver is being held without bond.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
How Motorcycles Put Riders at Risk
Motorcycles can leave their riders much more vulnerable than other methods of transportation. With no metal frame surrounding the rider, as in cars and trucks, he or she is exposed to direct contact with other vehicles, obstacles, and the road itself, and is therefore much more likely to be seriously hurt in a traffic accident.
In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, motorcycle riders made up 15 percent of traffic deaths in 2012, despite accounting for less than one percent of the total miles driven that year.
