Takata, the worlds leading airbag parts supplier, finally issued a nationwide recall in late April.

The majority of the vehicles were sold in the United States, but more than 30,000 Mazada pickups were sold in Canada.

Earlier this week, Mazda announced an auto recall affecting more than 500,000 vehicles with defective Takata airbags.
Recalled Mazda vehicles include:
- Mazda 6 (2003-08)
- Mazda Speed 6 (2006-07)
- Mazda RX-8 (2004-08)
- Mazda pickups (2004-06)
Recall Delays
Many consumers do not understand why the auto companies failed to act sooner. The recall process requires auto parts suppliers to identify the defects and issue recalls.
In the Takata defective airbag saga, the recall efforts of the auto companies and federal auto safety regulators were hampered by Takatas failure to issue wide recalls.
Takata repeatedly stated that limited regional recalls that covered only a fraction of the affected vehicles were sufficient.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Department of Transportation fined Takata more than $10,000 per day for failing to cooperate with safety investigators and failure to issue a nationwide recall.
After more than $1 million in fines and wide ranging investigations, Takata finally capitulated and issued a nationwide recall this spring.
