A driver was ejected from his vehicle in a fatal Marynook crash on Chicago’s South Side.
Fatal Marynook Crash in Early Morning
The fatal Marynook crash took place at approximately 12:35 a.m. on May 16, 2021. At that time, an 18-year-old man was driving a Chevy Cruze southbound on Dorchester Avenue, proceeding through its intersection with 83rd Street. A Lexus sedan that was heading east on 83rd Street then violently collided with the passenger side of the man’s vehicle.
The Chicago Police Department report that the driver of the Lexus was a man in his 20s. He was ejected from his Lexus and pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately identify him. The 18-year-old driver of the Cruz was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Area Two detectives are investigating the cause of the fatal Marynook crash. Currently, there are no citations pending in the incident.
Vehicle Ejections Often Deadly
Vehicle ejections are some of the deadliest traffic accidents imaginable. According to the Insurance Information Institute, 83 percent of passenger vehicle occupants who were fully ejected during fatal accidents in 2017 were killed.
Seatbelts are a crucial element in preventing incidents like the fatal Marynook crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has shown that seatbelts reduce the likelihood of deadly injuries to the front seat occupants of passenger vehicles by 45 percent, as well as the likelihood of moderate-to-critical injuries by 50 percent. For occupants of light trucks, the risk goes down by 60 percent and 65 percent, respectively.
