Joliet Pedestrian Accident Under Investigation

The Joliet pedestrian accident took place at approximately 6:50 a.m. on December 17, 2020, when Maria Dinardo was walking across the intersection of Hammes Avenue and West Jefferson Street. At that time, a vehicle struck Ms. Dinardo, knocking her to the ground.

Ambulance crews from Fire Station 6 arrived to find Maria Dinardo in the roadway. She was without a pulse and not breathing, even though people in the area were trying to perform CPR on her. She was transported to AMITA Saint Joseph Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead from her injuries.

The motorist who hit Ms. Dinardo remained at the scene and spoke with police, who closed down the intersection for several hours during their investigation into the cause of the Joliet pedestrian accident.

Pedestrians at High Risk in Car Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in car accidents in the United States each year. In 2016 alone, 5,987 pedestrians died in domestic collisions, equivalent to one crash-related fatality every 90 minutes. Though pedestrians only account for approximately 16 percent of total traffic accidents, they have a far greater probability of being severely hurt or killed. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than the occupants of passenger vehicles to die in collisions.

The impact of thousands of pounds of metal on an exposed human body can inflict devastating injuries even at relatively low speeds, while higher vehicle speeds may increase both the likelihood of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle and the severity of any injuries that might result from the incident.
