Three people were killed and another person was injured in a Mount Prospect traffic accident involving two vehicles in the northwest suburb.
Rollover in Mount Prospect Traffic Accident
The fatal Mount Prospect traffic accident took place on the early morning of March 7, 2021. At approximately 7:45 a.m., officers from the Mount Prospect Police Department responded to reports of a collision at Rand Road and Mount Prospect Road. Northwest of the intersection, the officers found a gold Ford SUV rolled over onto its roof and a white Honda sedan “with heavy damage.”
After a preliminary investigation, police determined that the Honda was traveling southbound from the exit of Mt. Prospect Plaza when the Ford, which was traveling northwest on Rand Road from Central Road, entered the intersection and struck the Honda, with the force of the collision flipping the Ford over.
The Honda’s three occupants were killed in the Mount Prospect traffic accident. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified them as 58-year-old Francisco Flores Rodriguez, 59-year-old Georgina Perez Gomez, and 31-year-old Francisco Flores Perez, all residents at the same address in Des Plaines. The driver of the Ford was transported to an area hospital for treatment after being extricated from the vehicle by emergency responders.
The cause of the Mount Prospect traffic accident was investigated by the Mount Prospect Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Team, along with assistance from the Major Case Assistance Team’s Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team. The investigators were reportedly seeking eyewitnesses to the event.
Rollover Crashes Frequently Deadly
While the Ford’s driver survived the Mount Prospect traffic accident, these types of collisions frequently have far worse outcomes for the occupants of vehicles that roll over. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that:
- 33 percent of vehicular deaths in the United States occur in passenger vehicles involved in rollover crashes.
- Over 10,000 people die in rollover crashes annually.
- 7 percent of vehicle occupants die in rollover crashes versus 0.2 percent who die in vehicles that do not roll over during a collision.
- More than 15,000 drivers are ejected from their vehicles in rollover crashes each year.
- Over 200,000 vehicle occupants sustain serious injuries in rollover accidents annually.
